I'm fairly new to this and am trying hard to build a good site with decent Google rankings and I've managed to get a No 11 ranking on one of my competitive keywords. But although I'm listed at the main directories and have a few reasonable incoming links, Google doesn't show me as having any backward links at all. How can I get Google to recognise these links?

Welcome jaycee33!!
You must have tried link:www.domain.com ..If yes, then Google show backlinks of only those sites with PR = > 4. You can try search for "domain" to find some of them...

Thanks for that Shabir, I've never seen the PR>4 mentioned anywhere else for showing links. Will Google still see my links and take them into account in determining my listing position despite my PR of 1? Otherwise it seems like a like Catch22 position.

When you do a search in google for backwards links (link:domain.com), yes it only showes pages that have PR4 or higher. This does not mean Google does not take links from pages with a PR3 or lower into account. It just has less affect on your website.
Your PR has nothing to do with it. But if you have incoming links from a bunch of good PR websites, your PR will go up and make it easier to get higher rankings.

Thanks Maarten, I'll just have to work at building quality links and lots of good content. Going to build a Blog page, everyone seems to advocate it.
