View Full Version : Editors contradicting each other?
Sydney

I submitted to the ODP twice, with 3+ weeks interval between submissions. No response. So, I wrote to the first editor listed (there are 3). She said her computer wasn't working properly and it would be about 2 weeks before she could get to me, and told me to write to editor #2. Editor number 2 says they have hundreds of submissions and if I submit again, I will be deleted as spam. What do I do now?

Welcome to the forums Sydney! :hi:
ODP = Patience
You have to be Very patient after submitting. 3 weeks is not long enough at all. Sometimes it takes 3 months or longer. It will not help to email an editor in most cases as they are volunteers that get hundreds of emails a day and submissions. They work on their own time. You have already submitted twice... that is more than enough.
An editor in here may be able to shed more light on this for you.
I would simply concentrate on making your site friendly for Google and if you have the bucks to get into Looksmart while you wait. There is no easy way to get into ODP except time.

Doug,
Thanks! I will definitely follow your advice and be patient - well, as patient as possible. (Lord, grant me patience and give it to me now!). :-)
I was going to submit to Yahoo next. Do you think Looksmart is a wiser choice? And, if so, why?

Which one is best to submit to first can be quite a debate in here. :)
I prefer Looksmart only because Google seems to respond to that listing real well. You also get a link in MSN, AltaVista, and until they go under... Excite. All of this helps with link popularity for your site. Plus many other ISP's, etc. Yahoo is simply yahoo and that is it.
Now, many others prefer Yahoo. I just am not one of them. :)

Are you asking about the site in your profile?

hey Sydney,... did you work with Ken Evoy on this? If so, I am impressed as he is very good at what he does.

Yes, I am asking about the site in my profile. (I'm not sure about the rules here, so don't want to mention it by name). I know it's as good or better than many of the new entries into Open Directory, Yahoo, etc., so feel like I CAN get in if an editor will look at it.
I do work with Ken and he is my mentor and editor, as well as e-publisher. He doesn't, however, have a lot of time to help me with this kind of project. So, I'm groping my way through it.
Thanks for all your help and advice. I know auctions backwards and forwards, but all this is new to me.

Yes Sydney, you should have no problem getting into ODP and the rest. Patience is required however for ODP.
Unlike "other" places, we are very relaxed with Url's. We feel that if a link will help the thread, then post it. Signatures are very welcome here as well. :)

Since ODP is made up of so many different volunteer editors, it all depends on the one you get. Some of them will respond immediately and help you. Others you'll never hear from. I rarely email them and usually just keep submitting every 3 or 4 weeks. However, recently I did email one after many, many submissions of a very good site, and it was still not listed. Within a day, the editor emailed me back, explained what was going on with his categories, and put my client's site in the directory. He even thanked me for my email, because he had been having trouble with his superior editors to get his categories up and running correctly. He used my email to spur them into action.
So I believe that emailing can only help you, if you do it in a nice way, of course! If the editor(s) you email don't reply, then go above their heads. Eventually you'll find someone who will help you, I would imagine. I'm sure that Newriver and the guy that helped me can't be the only helpful editor in all of ODP!
Keep trying!
Jill

Thanks for all your help and congratulations ... but I have to admit I am totally confused. The guide I have been reading says that unless a site is listed as "Web Sites" it isn't in Yahoo, and the only results I can find are listed as "Web Page Matches". Is this information correct, or not? And, if I am listed in regional, I don't know how to find the results. I originally applied to Yahoo Canada, since Ken Evoy and sitesell are Canadians and I understood that a regional listing is easier.
And if I am listed in regional, will I most likely gravitate to the "main" directory?
You can tell by these questions how little I know about this subject!
Thanks once again for your patience.

hey Sydney, we thought you were talking about the ODP directory as that is what you first post says? Yahoo is entirely different.

Doug,
I was talking about Yahoo because I didn't apply to the ODP as regional. I applied to Business: Opportunities: Home Based. However, if I'm in regional, I'm thrilled. But, how do I find my site? I just plowed through a lot of it, but didn't see it. Also, I typed in my site name, and nothing came up.
Thanks for going to so much trouble for a directory novice.:D

You will not be able to search for it for about one week or so. I do not know what category, so I cannot tell you where to look.
Maybe newriver knows? :)

newriver,
Do you know where to find my entry in the ODP? You said it looked like I was listed in regional, so obviously you know something I don't. If I am in the ODP, there will be dancing in the streets here in Atlanta.
Thanks!

In the meantime you could try and dig down into the categories where you may think your site belongs to. Do a search on your keywords to find other categories and go directly to the category.

Start Dancing
I forget just where I happened to stumble across it...lol.
But a good guess would be to look at the Regional/North America/Your state/Localities/First letter of your locality/Your locality/business and economy/then search through the sub cats there.....
it's in there, i know i saw it once.

As far as you not submitting to a regional category, sites just end up there sometimes...you may be in for a bit of a wait for the category you submitted to initially. but a regional listing won't prevent it at all.

newriver,
Thanks. I'll just keep plowing through categories until I (hopefully) find it, or until they notify me as to the mystery location. You and Doug have been great!
In the meantime, more patience. Sigh ...
