I've only briefly looked at AdWords, but I think a group is nothing more than a group of related ads. You group them for easier analysis.

An Ad Group is a group of ads running on the same list of keywords. This is a great way to test your ad copy and see which version gets you the best CTR and conversion (make sure you use tracking URLs). Google will rotate each ad equally until a CTR is established, then they start running the version with the highest CTR more often. Hope this helps.
