To that end one thing that I do know is that M$ has already got a pretty good base to start on with the indexing service which powers search on the knowledge base at M$ and is the search on the Windows operating system. It also powers search on SharePoint its portal software and server. IMHO, its weakness is that it is very dependent on parameters. I don't think SharePoint has fared as well as they beieve it should.

M$ hasn't been giving out a lot of info regarding the new platform but I believe we can count on two things. One it will include a PPC platform and two algo search will most assuredly be based on Inclusion of some sort.

I believe M$ sees a real opportunity in paid search. I recently read an article that predicted by 2007 paid search will be a 7 Billion dollar industry. That is a lot of money for so few players. MSN has also been rolling out Overture on many of its European and Asian sites which indicates they see a lot of potential in this.
