View Full Version : Is it worth renewing Inktomi subscriptions?

I've submitted numerous URLs to Inktomi and they have always ranked well in MSN. Is it really necessary to renew my subsciptions on an annual basis?
Inktomi quote "Renewing your subscription will assure that your subscribed URL(s) are not removed from the Inktomi Index and remain available to such Search Engines as MSN.com, Overture.com, Hotbot.com and other leading Search Engines."
What's the chances of my URLs being dropped out of the index if I don't renew? If they are not dropped will I lose my rankings?
Thanks

Elsewise "you'se pays your money and takes your your chances" Inktomi could be providing results on both MSN and Yahoo! or possibly neither because it isn't a done deal in either case.

I've noticed lately that INK is crawling much more than it used to, and that's on sites for which I've never paid them.
On top of that, they recent published a report (which they'd sponsored) in which they came out on top of Google for relevancy in their SERPs. Obviously, they're making efforts, so why pay them when they seem willing to index for free?

qwerty, I'm wondering if you've got lots of links to those sites or just nothing out of the ordinary, Inktomi hasn't been a real concern for a while but it seems things are looking up for it. Maybe that is why the sudden uptick in crawling. Hopefully a sign of better things aghead namely less PFI and more natural crawled results? IMHO, To compete with G it will have to add more pages to its index .

Definitely not lots. The site I'm talking about has been around for a little over half a year and only has 30 or 40 sites linking to it. But some of those sites are major authorities in its field, and they get tons of traffic. That may have something to do with it. My client's site only gets about 700 uniques a day, but that's up considerably from a few months ago.
I think that, until 2 or 3 months ago, INK had only crawled the site about once a month. Now it's coming in 5 or 6 times a week, and I'm getting a few more referrals from MSN now. But at least so far, the SEs served by INK aren't bringing in anything close to the referrals I'm getting from Google and Yahoo.

Thanks qwerty, nice of you to share! Yes I would say that is significantly stepped up from what I've see in the past. Inktomi is one from the days gone by. I remeber when it was provider for Yahoo! But IMHO, this is a good sign that things will start happening around Yahoo! sooner rather than later. IMHO, that is aggressive crawling for Inktomi and a precursor. Let's cross our fingers.

Thanks Doug, but it isn't me. It's a portrait of Yves Tanguy by Man Ray. I just like it. And I figure if people can post pictures of Scooby Doo, I can get away with an avatar like that.

I think the "submit it" product from bcentral may be more bang for the buck, because they also submit to many other search engines besides inktomi.

I used submit it before it was MS. But I'm sure it's improved, it was free then. Besides the other engines there were some some other features I think banners. How is that working for you!
