I submitted www.mustangforum.net to most popular search engines (yahoo, google, dmoz,e tc) 2 weeks ago and I haven't seen much of anything.

It's a phpbb based forum and I'm wondering if it's optimized well enough for search engines.

Do you have outside links pointing to the forum? If not, the search engines (most specifically Google) won't index the pages.

Hi Jill.

Does "outside links" mean links from other related websites?

If so, then no. What's the best way to get them? (There are other mustang websites but why would they include my website link for free?) What's the best way to approach trying to obtain outside links?

Submit to the appropriate category at www.joeant.com, www.goguides.org, and www.gimpsy.com.

There are probably lots of other directories in your industry also.

Then give it 2 - 3 months and see what happens!

Even once your home page is indexed, you'll find that Google doesn't index phpbb forums very well, because they use sessionIDs in the URLs. Search the phpbb forums for a thread entitled 'How Google spiders phpbb' and apply the necessary mod to help google index your forum.

I would suggest to begin that a page be put in with a link to the forums. That way SE will:

A) have more content to index
b) users would have a more clear idea about what the forums are about and what they may find interesting.

In this case I would definitely advise going to other related sites and asking them to link. The information page would also be a way of providing a cleaer idea about what the forums purpose is and the usefulness of it to their users.

A whole two weeks??

I'm afraid you will have to exercise a touch more patience with our friends the search engines. Try waiting for two months(at least!!). Unless of course you pay for placement.

I've listed your message board in our directory's Automotive chat listings section, at http://www.chatmag.com/topics/auto/automobile.html

It would help to at least post an introductory message in each category, rather than no posts at all.

Yes, unless 'you' are an active participant in your own forums, at least to start with, you may as well forget about anyone else posting or even a search engine wanting to list the forums. With zero or very little posts, why would a search engine wish to list it anyway? Even if you do get other sites to link to it, there is no reason to list it. With no content, no other site will want to link to it anyway.

You have a bunch of work ahead of you before you can start thinking about the search engines. Forums ain't easy.... trust me. :)

Doug has said it all....

Search Engines work like lenders...they only give you money if you have good credit ;). Get some visitors and search engines will follow....

Cheers!!
