Hi,

Would like to know more about benefits ODP listing gives. Is there a big time ;) lag between ODP acception and Google Directory acception? Or it's simultaneous? I checked the category I submitted my site to and it is ranked 6 in Google Directory. That would be nice to have a new site listed there.

And one more question, a little bit off-topic. Yesterday's Google thread discussed newbies' chances to raise their page ranks. Sharon and Roy suggested to use AddWords paid listings with a keyphrase rarely searched for. How technically can it bring any good for my submitted page? [if my page is linked from a page having a high PR, that'll be wonderful, but if I don't know where the link is placed and that page may have no PageRank at all...??? My concern is: will Google credit it's own link with 0 PR just to index my pages?]

well apart from the fact that you surely get in google after getting listed in ODP, you will also have your description shown with your site name ( in results). yeah but this description will not be the meta description , rather it is the same description you got in ODP.

The ODP directory is highly trusted by Google, thus the amount of PageRank passed on appears to be substantially more than it should be. Plus the ODP description appears to help with rankings. Plus ODP data is reproduced in numerous places across the net. Could you ask for anything more! Google's directory is built with modified ODP data (they put PageRank info in) - so yes there is a time lag.

I've personally never been a believer in the adwords thing. The only way I can see it helping you is if you've got adwords on popular terms for a substantial period of time (say 3 to 6 months). And people or search engines which ignore robots.txt create links to you.

My concern is: will Google credit it's own link with 0 PR just to index my pages?

Correct concern, in my humble opinion it not only won't but cannot. I think S + R's suggestion was that it may help you get your page crawled rather then better ranked? Again I personally don't believe in this, but it really is just hypothetical as it's so easy to get crawled from a link elsewhere anyway.

Like what was already said, an ODP listing will pretty much mean Google will find your site and add it during the next update. Not only that, but this ODP listing will help your pagerank (as well as your link pop on all other engines) plus Google will use your ODP description underneath your Google listing, which will in turn help your rankings if you have the searched keywords in this description. For example, if your ODP description is "sells blue, green and red widgets" and someone searches for 'green widgets' your ranking will be higher due to having these keywords in your ODP description.

Another great thing about about being in the ODP is that it provides results for AOL and Netscape, and depending on how good your ODP title and description are, these two (well, mainly AOL) can bring in a lot of traffic.
