Yesterday there has been about 25 hits from 131.107.3.* where * represents a number between 50-254.

I did a reverse lookup on one of the IP addresses and it resolved to tide8.microsoft.com.

Does Microsoft have a webcrawler of some sort that I don't know about? Has anyone ever seen anything like this? It just seems odd to see visitors from Microsoft on my site.

Thanks

Neo

Could be webproxies maybe?

Microsoft does have spiders. You see them once in a great while. Recently I have been seeing them more often. They have claimed they want to take on Google, so maybe this is it.

What UA (User Agent) was it using? Checkout this thread on the
M$ Prototype Crawler (http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8859&highlight=prototype+crawler)
the activity you describe looks like it may be indexing your site. Any info about it's depth and entry point would be much appreciated as I'm the Mod for MSN/Inktomi and this looks like it may be replacing Inktomi at some point.

Okay I did a little more digging in and it looks like that one of the many IP address that hit my site from Microsoft did a search on Google and accessed my site through there. Which I am guessing was a user. but then he/she crawled around my site using 23 other IP addresses. (it seems that everytime he/she visited a page, a new IP address was used)

One of the IP addresses resolves to tide78.microsoft.com. when I do a search for this on google it comes back as a visitor to other sites as well. The user agent was recorded as a IE 6.0.

From the above info, I am concluding that it was an actual user rather than a crawler.

I think the crawler MS is experimenting with is called something like MicrosoftPrototypeCrawler. I've seen hits from Tide before, and I was never sure, but I think it's not a bot.
