hi friends,

I found strange result in MSN.

eg.

"motor manufacturer" - 4829 results
"motor" - 2003 results

In normal logic "motor" result count should be more than "motor manufacturer"

anybody have idea about logic ?

Welcome to the forums krishn! :hi:

Making that comparison on MSN is not helpful. Looksmart probably just does not have as many sites listing for the term "motor" as it's waaaay too general. The other term is waaaaaay to general as well. Neither term is very good. No one should be targeting those terms anyway. No one should care about those terms.

I think general terms are also useful to target. Why do you say that?

I think targeting for general terms is only useful if you're looking to drastically increase your traffic -- maybe just to put something into people's minds. But it won't serve you very well if you're selling anything, because the vast majority of the traffic it brings you won't be the people who are looking for whatever it is you're offering.

Web searchers have gotten a lot smarter over the years, and they've learned that the best way to find what they're looking for is to search on specific keyword phrases. Otherwise, they're going to have to slog through pages and pages of results before they find what they really want.

Because of that, you're generally better off putting your efforts into optimizing for targeted keyword phrases. That way, when people come to your page from the SERP, they'll see right away that you have exactly what they're looking for.

Besides that, it's almost impossible to get to the top of the results for the more general phrases. There's just too much competition to make it worth the effort.
