My sites are almost burried in the depths. Anyway, I look forward for their future ranking system.

Hi srikanthsh,

Thanks for the question!

It is very frustrating for site owners to be buried deep - and we understand that all too well!

It is precisely for that reason that we decided - from the onset - that we will NOT use a rigid ranking system. We do NOT have 'popularity ranking' we do NOT have 'alphabetic sorting' and we do NOT have 'editor's choice'. And why? Because we find them too arbitrary and not giving the Searcher a good service.

Instead, we opted for a different system. First, we ensure (by a very stringent review process) that all the sites in a category provide the service implied by that category. Then, we change the order of sites in each category EVERY month - randomly.

Thus, you have a new chance, each month, to be placed in a respectably high place. You have an equal chance to be thrown to an even deeper depth ...

The only way to ensure that your site will get a favourable position. and escape the monthly reshuffle, is by acquiring either a 'Golden Star' or a 'Red Star'. The former is gained by promoting Gimpsy on your site (via a link) and the latter via participating in the monthly auction (starts at just 5 USD / month).

Have a look in another thread here http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9224 that has a lot of related information.

Hope that helps!

Maybe a voting system is a good idea for ranking.
Let the people going to a site choose how good it is

I am working on a rate me form that might be a good solution.

netbizcity.net

I have it running on my site at netbizcity.com

It's beta right now but it can eliminate to tricks that many use with a standard rate me form.
I may drop the price to free if I can get a ads to pay for it.

The current rating systems do not work.
I have seen sites place the ratings script on their index page to inflate the numbers.
Foul play - visitors are sending a vote when they open the index page.

With my system - it can't happen!

Any suggestions or comments are welcome

Hi vincentg,

I also agree with you that the current voting sytems do not work. In fact, I don't remember seeing any directory site that uses voting system that actually works.

Perhaps the closest to the ideal is amazon.com - but what other site has the traffic that is needed to give the 'net democracy' real substance?

Voting by whom? If it's by users then that is bad. A site could simply get a bunch of friends to go and vote for the site. :) People with time on their hands would win and stay at the top forever. LOL

A site could have friends vote for them but unless this person has a huge number of friends I don't think it would affect the ratings much.

Also keep in mind that friends will not go too far out of their way to help out and if it isn't something easy then they will not do it too often if at all.

Plenty of sites have rate me forms on there site and you will be surprised how few votes they really get.

If I asked my mods to vote for a site once per day, that would be quite enough votes over time. OR, program a bot to go and vote once per day.

Voting systems simply don't work and never have.

Guess you didn't check out my beta rating system.

Hi vincentg,

I did visit the site - and I am now a bit confused...

I tried the voting button - and it seems to work nicely. In fact, I liked it so much I tried it 4-5 times one after the other ;)

I did not see anything to suggest that the software was aware that it was the SAME person voting for the SAME site over an over again.

I am afraid Doug will not like it at all :( Especially when the voting is casted at the same time to many directories at once...

Well thanks for the votes - hope they were kind.

I will add code to it to catch such an event but it will not be 100%.

But then again what is to stop someone from clicking away on a PPC ad over and over again.

Things you have to live with the way I see it.

Again this is Beta and it is not being made available to the public yet.

But when it goes on the market it will be able to filter out 70% of the foul play and is a single form solution to cast the vote on several directories.

So far you are the first one to vote so many times.
Visitors that come to the site so far only hit it once.
And vote they did just check out the sites I'm listed in.
Some votes were not so great while others higher than I deserve.

The bottom line for me is what do people like yourself think of it?
Do you think it can do the job of ranking sites properly assuming it filters out the problems.

I think it is way too open to abuse.

PPC is subject to fraud as well, although I think most of them are sophisticated enough to be able to weed out abusers (clicking bots and identical IP's. etc.).

Yes, abuse would be very much in the picture if your voting system got popular. Those who dont have the time to sit there and vote over and over would be the ones who lose to those who do have the time.

I'm working on it.

Will have a bit of code to help block this problem.
I am also working on making it as easy as possible to set up for those who would like to use it.
I will have it available this Coming month for those who want it.

The track record on my site is pretty good so far.
