Hi all:

This IDC article says that AV will update their index in November. http://www.idg.net/ic_717246_1794_9-10000.html

If we can believe this perhaps AV is on the comeback trail.

I've seen this article before, except that I think they were claiming an October update.

We'll see.....

I guess a question might be ....... SO??

sheesh, why even announce something like this? JUST DO IT!

gee, I thought this was something all search engines did at least once a month? Why should a search engine have to announce this?

Is AV a search engine? Obviously not.

Maybe they should focus on getting the index up to date, rather then public relations!

Yes - when a search engine updates its index and the media finds that newsworthy, that's a sign that it doesn't happen very often! A pretty sad thing really.

Their indexing partner InfoSpider sends me weekly updates claiming they spider my site and my client sites on a weekly basis but unless the whole index is refreshed more often, I fail to see what good it will do in the short term.

Very good points Kal, true but indeed sad!~

From the article, reffering to AV...

That's not a search engine, but an archeology tool

lol....

What they forgot to mention perhaps is that it will be an update to last November's crawl!

I think they are in competition with Exicte to take away their crown as the slowest to update!~;)

for me, AltaVista= waste of time
impossible to optimize for really, who would bother these days? and not much traffic even when my pages come up by luck.

World breaking news ~ AV updated

Quickly runs to check logs......

Yes. Check the term:

search engine submissions

on Altavista. That term gets double the searches that the "optimization" term gets according to Wordtracker. Should gets lots of traffic ..... right?

sheesh. The last 2 days I have received ONE referral from AV on that term. Should not be possible. One should receive many more than that. No traffic on AV anymore.

AV might not have any traffic but AV makes up for it with lots and lots of pop-ups.

AV gets my award for the SE with the most spam.

Ain't it the truth! Shows clearly how much they are hurting now.

IF AV has updated it has not used the most recent crawl. My most recent pages listed are dated May 30 and Jun 1, while I have updated the site three times since then, Not too impressed.

 this is a little bit of an improvement...

Well AV has definitely done something in the past few days. One of my sites has gone from invisible to #1 for a very popular search term (167 million results) since Monday, and they have sent me half a dozen visitors today.

I've had a look at this update. Still can't see any new sites, but I did find this marvellous search, complete with picture :

http://uk.altavista.com/q?pg=q&q=confetti&kl=XX&what=uk&mm=1&search.x=33&search.y=5

Think they are trying to tell us something ?

AV updated about 1 month ago and has pulled in some decent results for me. It seems that although it may take only a month for a page to get into Altavista their refresh times have taken 6 month cycles.

The optimisation rules don't seem to have changed much. In that i used the same optimisation technique that I was using about 2 years ago and still got the positions needed. It's just you need TIIIIIIMMMMMEEE to see the results.

Hope this helps!

Can anyone tell me whether AV did or did not a update? I have submit a lot of site's in the past 4 months. I still don't see any of those site's in AV. And some of the site's i submit are realy popular and are also high in other SE's like Google and Fast.

So does AV only index if you pay for it? The free submission tool is being ignored by AV? Or do we still have to wait for the big update?

greetings, Johan (from Holland)

4 months ago might have been too late. I was submitting sites around the 6-th month area and those made it. You might have to wait until the next update in 6 months!!

I was seeing this sites by typing in the full URL after 1 month, but nothing in the listings till November!

Sorry,
Glyn.

Or it might be:

You're on a virtual server shared with a spammer that has just got your IP block banned. You'll need to change that to move on.

You submitted to many times and AV flagged your site as a ADDURL spammer

You've just had bad luck.

I am finding many sites that i submitted for free up through the end of September are appearing in AV...sites submitted in October and later are not found...
