Social Media - Good or Bad for the Internet?

I started getting very concerned about this new thang called social media quite awhile ago. It seems that many, many stories are simply re-packaged again and again, and submitted to many of these social media sites.

It also seems that many stories are just bad information, no matter what industry they are writing about, or even outright lies and written to gain backlinks, etc for clients, etc.

Is this a good thing? Many seem to think it is a good thing. I'm not so sure at all. Here is the very latest example of a story that received LOTS of press from big time news outlets, but was totally and completely fabricated (made up) for the benefit of a client of a social media marketeer.

This guy named "Lynden" made the whole thing up and now is being praised on places like sphinn and in his own blog. Here is a snippet from what he wrote in his blog linked to above:

"The only problem is, none of it is true, it’s a completely made up yarn. How do I know? I wrote it. It’s what I do for a living. I write content for websites which creates a buzz and hopefully gets links and people to the intended target.”

So; what do you all think about this?

This also brings up thoughts about Google and how she values websites in general. Many seem to think that social media will help you with Google. I think it does to a certain extent, but should it? Why should Google reward a website because it can produce total rubbish and false content and get lots of incoming links because of it? I think it's time for Google and all other major se's to take a step back and stop rewarding sites who spend their time on these type sites, and do so for only one reason.
