Quality is better than quantity

Choosing who links to you is just as important as how many link to you.
For example, say you sell landscaping and gardening supplies. Having a link placed on a web site for patios or home improvements will bring in traffic that is more likely to be interested in purchasing your product, than traffic that comes from a computer web site or a general links page.

How do you go about getting these kinds of links?
These sorts of quality reciprocal links usually only come about by negotiation and mutual agreement.
Once you find a business or web site you would like to link with, simply contact them and ask if you can have a link from their web site to yours.

But another very important benefit from having a high number of quality links is the effect it has on search engine ranking. A lot of the major search engines use "link popularity" as a main factor in determining where your site should rank. If your site has a lot of high quality sites linking to it, the search engines can assume it is a popular site and therefore should rank higher.

The search engines are smart though, in that they are now starting to look at not only the number of links pointing to your site, but the type of links they are. The types of links can be viewed in two ways:

  1. Links pointing to your site from other popular sites can indicate that your site is of better quality and deserves higher ranking.
That is, a handful of good quality links, with some engines, is better than 100 links from sites that are not popular.
  2. Some search engines can check the content of the sites linking in to your site (and in some cases, the content of the sites you link out to).
Therefore, if a gardening site is pointing to yours, this could be seen as saying your site is about gardening in some way.
If the content on your site is about gardening, then this will increase that theme even more and you may be ranked higher on gardening keywords.
Quality links means links from related pages and with high rankings in search engines.
Building Quality and Relevant back links is a dual advantage where you attract vistors from the reciprocal linking site and simultaneously boost your websites Page Rank.

BUT, only contact sites that invite emails for links. Else you will be seen as a spammer and actually prevent the site from linking to you.

I would change that to; Who links to you is more important than how many link to you.

The best way to get quality links (remembering Google monitors link trends) is to earn them by adding quality content and linking out to quality sites on your relevant quality content pages.

The best overall SEO practice is to read/print Googles Webmasters guidlelines from a SE point-of-view. After that, forget about ALL the SEs and focus almost entirely on making your site THE site for humans.

You can cater to the SE's by attempting to guess what they give boosts to, but you should know they give boosts to what their users (humans) want.

Above all, be patient and avoid link obsession along with shortcuts (there are none that work long term). Expect, for a new business, at least a 5 Year wait.

That's a bit extreme Dave. I'm all for waiting, but new web sites depending on keyword phrases targeted and the leg work that you have put into the strategy, in the first 12 months you should start to see some solid results starting to come through on Google.

Again it depends on alot of factors, but I don't agree that a web site has to wait 5 years to start seeing some solid results from an effective SEO strategy.

No, you have misunderstood. I mean it often takes at least 5 Years for a site to reach its peak in the SERPs. I.e. Become authoritative and have high PR. Most sites never make it at all.

Individual SEO results are extremely hard to measure as stages, by design of Google.

hello,
yes you are right, quality does matter a lot, once you build a trust with your visitor then for sure they will hit your page back, that means more traffic. Update three times a week but with quality content can bring more traffic than updating every day with anything irrelevant.

Theory? When did that become a theory? I know I've been gone for six weeks, but I missed something.
